A leaked internal email has shed light on a controversial incentive scheme rewarding staff at several UK airports for flagging oversized cabin bags on easyJet flights.
The email reveals that ground staff employed by handling firms Swissport and DHL Supply Chain – operating at airports including Gatwick, Bristol, and Manchester – are being paid £1.20 for every oversized bag they identify at the gate, with £1 received after tax. The initiative, dubbed the “EasyJet gate bag incentive,” has been quietly in place to help enforce the airline’s strict cabin bag policy.
However, the revelation has sparked debate around fairness and potential confrontation. Critics argue the incentive could lead to overzealous enforcement at boarding gates, with some passengers feeling unfairly targeted or penalised for minor baggage infractions.
Airport staff defending the scheme say the reward simply acknowledges the extra effort required to uphold airline baggage policies under pressure. But passenger rights groups fear it may lead to inconsistent or aggressive treatment at gates, particularly where bag sizing can be borderline.
The timing of the leak is notable, as the EU is currently considering new rules that could further disrupt baggage policy enforcement. A draft proposal suggests airlines may soon be required to allow all passengers one extra free cabin bag weighing up to 7 kg – a move that, if passed, would directly clash with easyJet’s current model of charging for anything beyond a small under-seat bag.
With budget airlines like easyJet relying heavily on baggage fees for revenue, any regulatory change could trigger a shake-up in airline pricing structures and on-the-ground enforcement strategies.
For now, travellers are advised to double-check their airline’s baggage rules before flying and expect heightened scrutiny at the gate – especially at airports where this incentive scheme is in play.
