An Uber driver became an unlikely hero at ParisLongchamp last Sunday after a dramatic last-minute dash helped Australian superstar Asfoora secure a historic victory.
Trainer Henry Dwyer had forgotten the horse’s passport — a crucial document required for entry to the race — leaving officials initially refusing to let Asfoora run in The Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp, one of Europe’s premier sprint races.
Realising the costly mistake, the team urgently called an Uber driver to make the 38-mile journey from Chantilly, where Asfoora was stabled, to Longchamp Racecourse in Paris. Against the clock, the driver sped across northern France, arriving with just 90 seconds to spare before the deadline.
Moments later, Asfoora thundered home to become Australia’s first-ever winner of the Prix de l’Abbaye, claiming an incredible €400,000 prize.
The quick-thinking Uber driver was rewarded with his regular fare — plus a well-deserved €200 tip.
A delighted Dwyer later joked, “We nearly didn’t get to run, but thanks to one Uber driver, we’ve made history.”
