An Uber driver in Liverpool was temporarily suspended after a passenger reported feeling “uncomfortable” about a crucifix hanging from his rear-view mirror during a journey.
The driver, a practising Catholic, told Driver Matty that Uber deactivated his account following a complaint made on 26 August 2025. The rider claimed the religious symbol made them uneasy, prompting Uber to launch an investigation.
In an email seen by DM News, Uber stated:
“Displaying personal items, such as religious symbols, can violate our Community Guidelines by making riders feel unwelcome or unsafe. As a result, your account has been temporarily deactivated while we investigate this matter further.”
The driver explained that he was shocked to be suspended for displaying his faith in such a personal way. “It was just a small crucifix hanging from my mirror. I never imagined it could get me banned from working,” he said.
Uber later reinstated his account after he provided a photo of his rear-view mirror with the crucifix removed.
The case has raised questions about the balance between Uber’s inclusivity policies and drivers’ rights to display personal or religious items in their vehicles.
Uber’s community guidelines state that drivers must avoid actions or displays that could make riders feel “unsafe or unwelcome,” but critics argue the policy leaves drivers in a difficult position if passengers are offended by personal expressions of faith.
This incident follows growing concerns from private hire drivers across the UK who say Uber’s policies are becoming increasingly strict, sometimes leaving them vulnerable to suspension without pay during investigations.
