Uber Driver Accused of Running Over Woman at Colchester Tesco to Face Jury Trial

An Uber driver accused of running over a woman in a supermarket car park will stand trial before a jury after denying all allegations.

According to a report by the Gazette, Walid Khan, 52, is accused of assaulting a female passenger following a disagreement during a journey to Essex University in June last year.

The incident is alleged to have taken place at the Tesco supermarket on Greenstead Road, Colchester. Colchester Magistrates’ Court heard that after the disagreement, Khan is said to have driven back to the supermarket car park and told the woman to get out of the vehicle.

Prosecutor Hollie Davies told the court the complainant reported that as she was removing shopping from the boot, Khan put the car into reverse and struck her. It is also alleged that another vehicle in the car park was damaged as Khan drove away from the scene.

Khan, of Craig Court, Iceni Way, Colchester, denies one charge of actual bodily harm, one charge of dangerous driving, and one charge of failing to stop after a road traffic collision. He requested a jury trial and is due to appear at Ipswich Crown Court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on Tuesday, 17 February.

This is a serious case and, as with all proceedings at this stage, it is important to stress that the defendant denies the charges and the allegations have not been proven.

Incidents involving alleged vehicle-related assaults inevitably raise concerns around passenger safety, driver conduct, and how disputes during private hire journeys are handled once they escalate outside the vehicle. Cases like this also highlight the significant legal risks drivers face when confrontations occur in public places such as supermarket car parks.

The outcome of this trial will be closely watched locally, particularly given the charges include dangerous driving and failing to stop after a collision. DM News will continue to follow the case as it progresses through the courts.
