DM News Commentary
International taxi scams are nothing new — but seeing familiar holiday destinations dominate the list is a reminder that British travellers must stay alert abroad.
Places like Turkey, Spain, Italy and Portugal attract millions of UK tourists each year. When these countries appear in the global “worst scam hotspots,” it shows how widespread taxi-related issues have become for visitors. Even destinations normally seen as orderly or high-tech — Japan and Germany — made the list due to reports of drivers overcharging tourists unfamiliar with local fares.

For UK travellers, it reinforces the importance of:
- Pre-booking airport transfers when possible
- Checking verified taxi ranks
- Avoiding unmarked or cash-only rides
- Using apps that provide fare estimates upfront
But this ranking also reflects well on the UK taxi and PHV sector. While our industry is far from perfect — with debates about licensing, cross-border working and CCTV still ongoing — our transparency and fare structure are among the most regulated in the world.
UK passengers generally know:
- What a meter should display
- What the tariff is
- That drivers are vetted and licensed
- That operators are accountable
Many countries on the list have far looser enforcement, which creates more opportunities for scams.
For UK taxi and PHV drivers, this is a reminder that customer trust is a valuable currency. British passengers returning from scam-heavy destinations often appreciate the professionalism and standards at home far more after experiencing the opposite abroad.
