Taxi Safety Crackdown Near East Midlands Airport Leads to Licence Suspensions and Prosecution Reports

A road safety operation targeting vehicles around East Midlands Airport has led to two taxi drivers having their licences suspended on the spot due to dangerous defects.

Officers from the Roads Policing Unit (RPU), working alongside the airport policing team and staff from the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Taxi Licensing Department, stopped 29 vehicles during the operation. Of these, 21 were escorted for detailed inspections by vehicle examiners.

The checks uncovered a number of serious issues:

  • Two immediate licence suspensions were issued after taxis were found with defective tyres in a dangerous condition.
  • Six drivers were reported for traffic offences, including having no insurance and using illegal tyres.
  • One taxi received a prohibition notice for being in an unroadworthy condition.

PC Adam Sparrow from the RPU said:

“The aim of the operation was to ensure that people going to the airport for their summer holiday arrive safely. From an operational point of view, it was a great success and we had lots of positive comments from passengers and the other agencies we worked with. However, it is disappointing that we found taxis that were unroadworthy, risking the safety of their passengers – not something you expect when you get in a taxi. We will be carrying out another operation in the near future and would urge taxi drivers to ensure their vehicles are 100% roadworthy.”

The RPU has confirmed that further enforcement operations are planned, with a continued focus on passenger safety and compliance with roadworthiness standards.
