A Grimsby man who ran away from a £15.90 taxi journey in Chester has ended up paying £472.90, after the incident was taken to court.
According to a report by Chester Standard, the passenger took a taxi journey in Chester before running from the vehicle without paying the £15.90 fare. The driver was left out of pocket and reported the matter, which was later heard at Chester Magistrates’ Court.
£15.90 Taxi Fare Turns Into a £472.90 Bill
Magistrates were told the original fare was just £15.90, but the defendant’s decision to flee rather than pay resulted in criminal proceedings.
The court ordered the man to pay £472.90 in total, made up of the unpaid fare, a fine, compensation, and court costs. The bench made it clear that deliberately avoiding payment for services such as taxi journeys is a criminal offence and will be dealt with firmly.
What could have been resolved in seconds ended up costing almost 30 times the value of the original journey.
Fare Evasion Remains a Frustration for Taxi Drivers
Fare evasion continues to be a persistent issue for taxi and private hire drivers, particularly during late-night work. While the amounts involved are often relatively small, the impact on drivers can be significant — especially when incidents involve abuse, confrontation, or the risk of violence.
Many drivers say that reporting incidents is the only way to protect themselves and deter repeat behaviour, even though it can involve additional time and stress.

DM News Commentary
This case is a textbook example of how trying to dodge a small taxi fare can spiral into a very expensive mistake. A £15.90 journey turned into a £472.90 court bill and a criminal conviction — all for running away instead of paying.
For taxi and private hire drivers, it’s also a reminder that the courts do take fare evasion seriously when cases are properly reported. While no driver wants the hassle, outcomes like this send a clear message that abusing or robbing drivers of their earnings will not simply be brushed aside.
