Sheffield Man Fined Over £3,800 for Illegally Operating as a Taxi in Barnsley

A Sheffield man has been fined more than £3,800 and banned from driving for six months after attempting to operate an unlicensed taxi in Barnsley town centre.

Mohammed Sajjad Khan, 32, was caught on Pell Street in Barnsley on 10 March 2024, trying to pass off his Skoda Octavia as a hackney carriage.

Khan failed to appear at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on 20 February, where he was found guilty in his absence. The court handed him a driving ban and a substantial fine, which included £2,000 for unlawfully posing as a taxi driver, £440 for driving without insurance, £976 in surcharges, and £440 in court costs.

Authorities continue to crack down on illegal taxi operations, stressing the importance of passenger safety and proper licensing.
