Sheffield council bans private hire operator signage on vehicles — with some exceptions

Sheffield City Council has officially removed the requirement for private hire vehicles to display operator signage, in a move that has sparked discussion among drivers and the wider trade.

Craig Harper, Chief Licensing Officer for Sheffield City Council, confirmed the change, stating that operator branding is no longer permitted on private hire vehicles in the city.

However, the council has acknowledged some limited exceptions to the new rule. Vehicles operating under council contracts — particularly those providing services for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) — may still be required to display signage during those journeys.

Importantly, Sheffield City Council door signs and rear licence plates can now be attached using magnets, allowing them to be easily removed when the vehicle is not in use for private hire purposes. This flexibility means that signage can be taken off when the vehicle is parked or used for personal use.

The change is intended to create consistency and reduce the risk of unauthorised use of branding while maintaining public safety and compliance during contracted services.

Drivers and operators across Sheffield are encouraged to share their thoughts on the new policy as the industry adapts to these updated licensing requirements.
