Motorists with electric vehicles (EVs) are being urged to act fast and renew their car tax before a major change comes into effect. In the UK From April 2025, EV owners will be required to pay Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) for the first time, with the annual rate increasing from £0 to £190. However, drivers can take advantage of a simple loophole to delay this extra cost for another year.

Renew in March to Lock in Another Free Year
It doesn’t matter when your car tax is actually due—if you renew it online now in March 2024, you can extend your tax for another 12 months at £0. That means, instead of being forced to pay the £190 fee when your tax is up, you’ll only need to start paying in March 2026.
Driver Matty has already taken advantage of this trick. His car tax was originally set to renew in June 2025, meaning he would have been hit with the £190 charge then. However, by renewing early this March, he has secured another year of free tax, pushing his first payment back to March 2026.
Why This Works
Car tax always defaults to the first of the month, so renewing early does not mean you lose out on any days. If your renewal date is anytime after March 2024, taking action now allows you to sidestep the incoming charge for an extra year.
How to Renew
You can renew your car tax easily through the DVLA website. Simply enter your vehicle details and follow the renewal process.
With time running out before the new fees take effect, this is a smart move for any EV owner looking to delay the extra expense. Don’t wait until it’s too late—renew now and keep your car tax-free for another year!
