Private hire drivers are being urged to ensure they are displaying their plates correctly after two alarming incidents were spotted this week.
The first involved a Liverpool City Council plated vehicle where the driver had trapped it in the rear plate to the rear window wiper, leaving it difficult to read. The second case concerned a Wolverhampton plated driver, whose plate was spotted lying loosely on the parcel shelf inside the car, again making it unreadable from outside.

Both of these methods breach licensing regulations, which state that plates must be clearly fixed to the outside of the vehicle at all times and easily visible to enforcement officers, passengers, and the general public.
Failing to correctly display a private hire plate can lead to serious consequences including fines, penalty points on your licence, and even suspension or revocation of your private hire licence. Each council has strict rules in place to protect passenger safety and ensure transparency within the industry.
Why Plate Display Matters
- Public Safety: Clearly displayed plates reassure passengers they are entering a properly licensed vehicle.
- Compliance: Councils use plate checks to monitor that vehicles are insured, roadworthy, and driven by authorised drivers.
- Professional Image: Properly displayed plates maintain the reputation of the private hire trade.
Drivers are reminded to check their plates are securely fixed and fully visible at all times. Quick fixes like taping, tying, or resting plates inside the vehicle are not acceptable and could cost you far more than just a slap on the wrist.
Authorities are stepping up random inspections and spot checks across the country. Don’t risk hefty fines — sort your plates out now.
