Police pursuit in St Helens ends with taxi driver’s arrest and major drugs seizure

A 29-year-old man has been arrested in St Helens after a late-night police pursuit involving a Kia Niro taxi, according to Merseyside Police.

Taxi fails to stop after driving through road closure

The incident began around 11 pm on Sunday, 12 October, when officers attempted to stop a taxi that ignored a road closure at the junction of Bold Lane and Broad Lane.

When the driver failed to stop, officers from the Matrix Roads Policing Unit initiated a pursuit that ended on Carole Close in Sutton Leach, where the taxi finally came to a halt.

Driver detained after fleeing scene

Police say the driver fled on foot but was “detained nearby”. Following a search of the area, officers discovered a package of suspected Class A drugs in a garden, along with bags of cannabis and a large quantity of cash. Further cash was later seized during a property search linked to the suspect.

Multiple charges under investigation

The man was arrested on suspicion of:

  • Possession with intent to supply Class A and Class B drugs
  • Dangerous driving
  • Drug driving
  • Failing to stop
  • Possession of criminal property

He remains in police custody while investigations continue.

Police praise quick-thinking officers

Inspector Emma Haffenden from Merseyside Police’s Matrix Roads Policing team commended her colleagues, saying:

“Thanks to the observations and quick thinking of our officers they were able to pursue and detain the driver and seize a large quantity of suspected Class A and B drugs.”

She also warned offenders that police are determined to dismantle organised crime in the region:

“My message to those involved in drug supply and serious organised crime is clear – Merseyside Police will never rest. We are relentless in our pursuit of those involved.”

Inspector Haffenden appealed to the public for continued support, adding:

“Information from the public is vital if we are to break down the organised crime groups who bring misery to our streets. I would appeal to anyone who has information to come forward.”
