Polestar’s new tech lets EVs power homes — but will it come to the UK?

Polestar has confirmed that its Polestar 3 will support bi-directional charging, allowing the vehicle to power a home through vehicle-to-home (V2H) technology. The update was announced in the US, with the brand partnering with energy-tech company dcbel, as reported by InsideEVs.
InsideEVs also reports that the Volvo EX90 is expected to gain the same capability in the future.

Only a small part of this system is confirmed so far — it will launch in the US first and requires a specialist home energy system to manage DC export from the vehicle’s battery.

Polestar’s announcement marks another step in EVs becoming more than just vehicles — they’re turning into mobile energy assets:

  • Backup power for homes and home-based operators
A V2H-enabled EV could keep your home office, dispatch laptop, Wi-Fi or even lighting running during a blackout — a significant benefit for self-employed PHV drivers.
  • Lower living costs through smart energy use
Drivers might charge cheaply overnight and power their homes during expensive daytime rates, indirectly reducing the household bills that affect every driver’s bottom line.
  • Future-proofing fleets
Vehicles like the Polestar 3 and Volvo EX90 could stand out not only for range and comfort but for energy capability — appealing to operators investing in long-term EV fleets.
  • But the UK isn’t there yet
The US launch doesn’t guarantee immediate UK adoption.
Bi-directional charging here would require approved hardware, grid certification, and manufacturer support — all of which can take time.

Overall, this is one of the most promising EV developments for the taxi and PH trade in years. If the UK gets full V2H support, it could help drivers cut costs, stay operational during outages and extract more value from their vehicles than ever before.

DM News will be watching closely for the first UK confirmations.
