A TikTok video showing a nervous passenger reacting as a driverless Waymo vehicle pulls out from the kerb into live traffic has gone viral, reigniting debate around public confidence in autonomous taxis.
The short clip, shared on TikTok, shows the passenger visibly panicking moments after the ride begins. As the Waymo robotaxi moves off from its parked position at the side of the road and merges into traffic, the passenger screams and can be heard saying they would “never take a Waymo ever again”.

The video’s caption reads “First and last Waymo ride”, suggesting the experience was enough to put the passenger off autonomous taxis entirely. While the vehicle does not collide with anything in the clip, the abrupt pull-off and lack of a human driver appear to heighten the passenger’s anxiety.
Waymo operates fully driverless taxi services in several US cities, where vehicles are designed to follow traffic laws, detect surrounding vehicles, and merge safely into traffic using sensors and software rather than a human driver.
DM News Commentary
Videos like this highlight one of the biggest challenges facing driverless taxi services — passenger trust. Even if an autonomous vehicle is operating correctly and legally, the lack of a visible driver means passengers have no reassurance from human judgement in moments that feel risky, such as pulling out from the kerb into busy traffic.
For many passengers, especially those used to taxis, private hire, or chauffeur services, confidence comes from eye contact, verbal reassurance, and the sense that someone is actively in control. Driverless technology may handle these situations safely on paper, but clips like this show that public acceptance still has a long way to go.
As autonomous taxis expand into more cities, operators will need to focus not just on safety statistics, but on how safe the ride feels to everyday passengers.
