A joint enforcement operation by Barnsley Council and South Yorkshire Police has revealed the scale of out-of-town taxi and private hire activity in Barnsley town centre, just north of Sheffield.
The operation, carried out on 12 July between 7:20pm and 9:10pm at the Eldon Street taxi rank, identified more than 100 vehicles licensed by other authorities working in the town during the short two-hour window.
Out-of-Town Taxis Under Scrutiny
The enforcement was launched in response to growing concerns about the number of hackney carriages and private hire vehicles licensed elsewhere operating within Barnsley.
During the checks, officers stopped and spoke with 13 out-of-town drivers regarding various offences. Each case has now been reported to the relevant licensing authority for further action.
Barnsley-Licensed Vehicles Also Checked
The operation also targeted locally licensed taxis. Four Barnsley-licensed vehicles were stopped after officers identified several compliance issues.
A report following the operation highlighted the council’s commitment to ensuring public safety and accountability across the industry.
Safety First, Say Authorities
In its findings, the council stressed that vehicle failures are unacceptable and that both operators and drivers must take full responsibility.
“Vehicle failures are always unacceptable, and our enforcement operations must convey the message that operators, vehicle proprietors and drivers must accept responsibility for any failures and make a change. The principal consideration for all is, as always, one of public safety.”
Ongoing Enforcement to Continue
Barnsley Council has confirmed that proactive and reactive enforcement operations will continue regularly to monitor both local and out-of-town vehicles working in the area.
