An Uber driver in Oldham has been left injured and shaken after falling victim to a brutal and unprovoked assault by two male passengers during a journey through Derker.
The shocking incident unfolded while the vehicle was in motion, with one of the assailants attempting to strangle the driver from behind, while the second repeatedly punched him. The violent outburst not only endangered the driver’s life but also posed a serious risk to the safety of other road users.
A swift intervention by a member of the Oldham Private Hire Drivers Association (OPHDA) meant the injured driver was quickly taken to Accident & Emergency for urgent medical treatment.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and Greater Manchester Police are now investigating the incident. The OPHDA has issued a strong condemnation of the assault and is urging all drivers across Oldham and Greater Manchester to stay alert while on duty.
“This was a deeply disturbing incident that could have had far more tragic consequences. We commend the rapid response of our OPHDA colleague, and we urge any driver who witnesses or experiences similar behaviour to contact the police and report it to us immediately,” an OPHDA spokesperson said.
The rise in attacks on private hire drivers continues to raise concerns about safety in the sector, particularly during late-night hours. Calls are growing for increased protection measures, such as in-car CCTV systems, clearer passenger verification processes, and greater cooperation between platforms like Uber and local enforcement bodies.
