Luton Airport’s Terminal Car Park 2 Reopens After Devastating Fire

London Luton Airport has officially reopened its rebuilt Terminal Car Park 2, almost two years after a huge fire destroyed the original multi-storey facility in October 2023.

The blaze, which made international headlines, caused parts of the structure to collapse and forced the demolition of the entire car park. Since then, passengers have faced diversions, temporary drop-off areas, and increased congestion — but from this week, the new 1,900-space car park is back in service.

🚗 A Brand-New Facility for Passengers

The new Car Park 2 has been rebuilt from the ground up and is directly connected to the terminal by covered walkways.

  • Capacity: 1,900 parking spaces
  • New feature: A covered express drop-off and pick-up zone on the ground floor, improving convenience and protection from the weather
  • Transport boost: The temporary drop-off site will now be repurposed into extra bus stands, helping to ease traffic flow

💷 Changes to Drop-Off Charges

The relaunch comes with updated tariffs for drivers dropping passengers at the terminal:

  • £7 for the first 10 minutes (previously £5 for 5 minutes)
  • £1 per minute thereafter
  • Stay capped at a maximum time limit

Although the cost has increased, the airport has doubled the free stay allowance from five to ten minutes, which management says will help reduce pressure during peak times.

🌍 Focus on Public Transport

As part of the reopening, Luton Airport has also launched a £1.5 million Public Transport Investment Fund. The initiative will run for the car park’s first year of operation, with the aim of encouraging more passengers to choose greener travel options such as bus, coach, or train.

✈️ What It Means for Travellers

For passengers, the return of Car Park 2 should ease congestion and improve journey times, especially during busy periods. Taxi, private hire, and minibus operators serving the airport will also benefit from smoother access to the terminal and less disruption at drop-off points.

This marks a significant milestone in Luton Airport’s recovery since the 2023 fire, restoring a key piece of infrastructure and offering improved facilities for years to come.
