The iconic London black cab is taking on a new lease of life – not as a ride for tourists or commuters, but as a lifeline for patients across the capital.
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust has rolled out a fleet of 12 purpose-built “taxi-ambulances” to expand its non-emergency patient transport service. The vehicles, while resembling traditional London taxis, are painted white and proudly display the NHS logo, the Trust name, and high-visibility ambulance markings for clear identification.
Built by the London EV Company (LEVC), these TX electric hybrid vehicles are fully wheelchair accessible and designed with accessibility in mind. Features include integrated ramps, a step and swivel seat, braille switches, and high-visibility handles – all aimed at making transport easier for patients with mobility challenges.
Since their introduction, the taxi-ambulances have already clocked up 60,000 miles, transporting more than 13,000 patients to appointments at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals and community clinics.
Daniel Crossey, general manager of non-emergency patient transport at the Trust, said:
“These new vehicles are more sustainable and accessible, but also look great. Everyone can identify a London cab – we’ve even had people try to flag one down on the street.
The feedback we’ve had from patients who are using these is really positive – they like the comfort, the additional space and the flexibility they provide. And our drivers enjoy taking them out on the roads. They’re a great addition to our patient transport fleet.”
The new vehicles have the famous taxi turning circle, ideal for navigating London’s narrow and often congested streets. But they also offer a quieter, more spacious ride for patients, with plenty of room for medical equipment and the capacity to carry multiple passengers when necessary.
Jenny Jin, Executive Director at LEVC, added:
“TX is a purpose-built electrified vehicle designed to serve a wide range of transport needs, and we’re delighted to see it making a real difference for patients at Guy’s and St Thomas’. With its iconic design, zero-exhaust emission capability and class-leading accessibility, the TX is perfectly suited to support NHS services. We’re proud to be working with the Trust and look forward to strengthening our partnership in the future.”
The initiative marks another step forward in creating a sustainable, patient-friendly NHS transport service that blends tradition with innovation – and it might just make you do a double take next time you spot a London cab.
