Liverpool Cracks Down on Illegally Parked Vehicles in Taxi Ranks: 37 Drivers Fined in Weekend Blitz

Liverpool City Council’s Licensing Enforcement Officers teamed up with Parking Services this past weekend in a targeted operation aimed at tackling a growing issue – vehicles illegally parked on designated taxi ranks.

The joint operation, which took place across various city centre locations, resulted in 37 Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) being issued to drivers who were found obstructing taxi ranks. These spaces are reserved exclusively for licensed hackney carriages to pick up passengers, and unauthorised vehicles not only block access for drivers but also disrupt the smooth running of the city’s transport system.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Liverpool Licensing reminded the public: “Taxi Ranks are for Taxis!” – a clear message to those ignoring the rules and causing inconvenience for both drivers and passengers alike.

The crackdown comes amid growing frustration from taxi drivers who regularly report private vehicles and delivery drivers misusing taxi ranks as convenient parking spots. Not only is this illegal, but it also forces taxi drivers to find alternative (and often unsuitable) places to wait for fares.

A spokesperson for Liverpool City Council said:

“We are committed to supporting our licensed taxi trade by keeping ranks clear and accessible. These areas are not general parking bays — they are a vital part of the public transport network.”

Drivers caught parking on a taxi rank can face a Penalty Charge Notice of up to £70, reduced if paid early.

The council has indicated further joint operations in Liverpool are likely in the coming weeks, sending a strong message that misuse of taxi ranks won’t be tolerated.
