Long-haul flights are extremely rare from Liverpool John Lennon Airport, with most passengers needing to travel to Manchester or London for destinations further afield. However, that changes in 2026, as Aer Lingus now lists Liverpool as a departure point for flights to Cancún, Mexico, via its Dublin hub.
According to Aer Lingus’ official booking page, passengers will be able to fly from Liverpool to Cancún with a connection through Dublin Airport. While the long-haul sector itself operates from Dublin, the route is sold as a single Aer Lingus journey starting at Liverpool — something that has been almost unheard of for the airport in recent years.
This development follows Aer Lingus announcing a new long-haul service between Dublin and Cancún beginning in 2026, which opens up Mexico to regional UK airports like Liverpool, plus other UK Airports through seamless connections.

DM Commentary
For Liverpool passengers, this is a big step forward — even if it’s not a direct long-haul flight from Speke just yet. Historically, travellers heading to destinations like Mexico have had little choice but to use Manchester Airport or travel south.
Being able to start the journey at Liverpool and connect via Dublin is still a major win. It reduces reliance on longer road journeys and gives Merseyside travellers another realistic long-haul option without leaving the region.
From a wider transport perspective, this also highlights how hub-and-spoke models can benefit regional airports without the huge costs of running direct long-haul services. If demand proves strong, it could strengthen the case for more long-haul connectivity linked to Liverpool in the future.
