An Edinburgh taxi driver has been hailed as a hero after bravely stopping a runaway delivery van that was rolling downhill through a residential street.
Quick-thinking driver saves the day
According to Edinburgh Live, the incident happened on Tuesday, 4 November 2025, when 53-year-old Graeme Miller, a driver for Central Taxis, noticed a white delivery van drifting unattended down Clermiston Road in Edinburgh.
Realising that no one was behind the wheel and the van was gathering speed, Miller immediately stopped his taxi, ran into the road, and managed to jump into the moving vehicle. He quickly applied the handbrake and brought the van to a safe stop before it could hit anything or anyone.
The van, which was reportedly loaded with tools, had begun to roll after its handbrake slipped. Miller later told Edinburgh Live he acted on instinct, saying he “didn’t really have time to think” and was just focused on stopping the vehicle before it caused harm.
Praise from the taxi firm
A spokesperson for Central Taxis told Edinburgh Live they were extremely proud of their driver, adding that his “quick actions may well have prevented a serious accident.”
The company shared the story across their social media channels, where locals praised Miller’s bravery and quick thinking.
Why this matters to the trade
This incident shows how professional taxi drivers often step up in unexpected emergencies — using their road awareness and experience to protect others. Miller’s actions highlight the value of vigilance, proper driver training and quick decision-making — all skills essential within the taxi and private-hire industry.
It’s also a reminder for delivery drivers and tradespeople to double-check handbrakes and parking positions, particularly on hilly roads such as those around Clermiston.
