FREENOW Introduces Virtual Ranks for Drivers at Heathrow Airport

FREENOW, now part of Lyft, has launched a new Virtual Rank system at Heathrow Airport in a move aimed at making passenger pick-ups fairer and more organised for drivers.

The digital queuing system allows private hire drivers to join a first-in, first-out waiting list for each terminal, replacing the need for drivers to wait around physically in unofficial areas.

How the Virtual Rank Works

When a driver enters one of the designated Virtual Rank zones at Heathrow, a notification appears in the FREENOW driver app. To receive job offers, drivers must tap to join the queue.

  • Drivers are then placed in line for jobs at that specific terminal.
  • The first driver to enter the zone gets the first booking request, and so on.
  • Separate ranks exist for Terminals 2 & 3, Terminal 4, and Terminal 5.

Importantly, the system only applies to on-demand bookings, not advance bookings.

Waiting Rules and Penalties

Drivers must stay inside the Virtual Rank zone to hold their place. Leaving the zone means being removed from the queue.

Once at the top of the rank, drivers receive the next passenger request and can then proceed to the designated pick-up point in the Short Stay car park.

Rejecting a job will send the driver back to the end of the line, while cancellations by passengers won’t affect their position.

Crackdown on Illegal Waiting Near Heathrow

The new system comes as Hillingdon Council takes tougher action against drivers waiting in nearby residential streets. Officers are now authorised to issue £100 fixed penalty notices to those caught parking illegally around Heathrow.

FREENOW has urged drivers to avoid these residential zones and instead use the new digital ranks to ensure compliance and avoid fines.

A Step Towards Fairer Airport Pick-Ups

By introducing this system, FREENOW hopes to create a more transparent and fair process for airport jobs while helping reduce congestion and tension between drivers competing for fares.

The Virtual Rank is expected to benefit both drivers and passengers by making the allocation of jobs more efficient and minimising long waits in unauthorised areas.
