The threat of major festive disruption at London Luton Airport has been avoided after ground handling staff agreed to suspend planned strike action following a revised pay offer.
According to Travel Weekly, staff employed by DHL, who provide baggage handling and check-in services for easyJet at Luton Airport, had been due to strike between 26 and 28 December, a period expected to be one of the busiest of the year for air travel. The industrial action was linked to a long-running pay dispute and had raised concerns over flight delays and cancellations during the Christmas getaway period.
Following last-minute talks involving Unite, DHL and conciliation service Acas, an improved offer was put forward to workers. Unite confirmed that strike action would be suspended while members are balloted on whether to accept the new terms, effectively removing the immediate risk of festive flight disruption at the airport.
The dispute had already seen staff reject an earlier 4.5% pay proposal and carry out walkouts earlier in December, increasing pressure on negotiations as the holiday period approached.

This is a significant relief not just for passengers, but also for airlines, private hire drivers, taxi operators and airport transfer firms operating in and around Luton. Any large-scale disruption over Christmas typically has a knock-on effect far beyond the terminal — from missed connections and delayed hotel check-ins to passengers relying on taxis and pre-booked airport transfers at unsociable hours.
For drivers, last-minute cancellations and re-routed flights can create chaos, particularly during a period when many are already working extended hours to cover festive demand. This case once again highlights how critical ground staff are to the aviation ecosystem, and how quickly disputes can escalate when peak travel periods approach.
