Electric Vehicles Power UK New Car Market to Strongest September Since 2020

Britain’s new car market has recorded its best September in five years, driven by a surge in electric vehicle (EV) registrations as the industry continues to shift toward cleaner transport.

According to preliminary data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), new car registrations rose 13.7% in September to 312,887 units, marking a significant rebound after a quieter summer. The month — one of the most important in the automotive calendar due to the new numberplate release — typically accounts for around one in seven of all annual vehicle sales.

For the first time, electrified vehicles (a category that includes fully electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid models) made up over half of all new registrations. This milestone highlights the accelerating pace of the UK’s transition to electric mobility, even as manufacturers and policymakers face pressure to boost private-buyer confidence and charging infrastructure.

SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes said:

“Electrified vehicles are powering market growth after a sluggish summer. Continued support measures like the Electric Car Grant can help break down affordability barriers and encourage even more drivers to make the switch.”

A Boost for the UK Auto Industry

The strong September results provide a welcome boost to the UK automotive sector, which has faced global supply chain issues, cost pressures, and uncertain consumer demand. As the country races toward its 2035 target to end sales of new petrol and diesel cars, industry leaders continue to call for long-term investment in battery production and charging networks to maintain momentum.

While fleet and business sales have led the charge, the focus now turns to private buyers, whose adoption rate remains slower amid concerns over upfront costs and charging convenience.

Nevertheless, the September results show growing public interest in EVs, supported by increased model availability and wider awareness of the environmental benefits.
