Edinburgh Airport Increases Drop-Off Fees to £6: A Push for Public Transport and Sustainability

Starting Monday, January 13, 2025, Edinburgh Airport will increase its drop-off and pick-up charge to £6 for the first ten minutes. This £1 rise from the previous fee is part of the airport’s strategy to encourage passengers to opt for public transport options like buses and trams, aiming to reduce emissions and alleviate congestion.

The revenue generated from this increase is intended to fund passenger experience enhancements and infrastructure developments within the airport. Gail Taylor, the airport’s Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized the importance of sustainable travel choices, noting that car journeys contribute more significantly to pollution compared to public transport. She stated, “We want more people to use the robust transport links we have as this both reduces emissions and congestion.”

Despite these intentions, the decision has faced criticism. The Scottish Conservatives have accused the airport of treating drivers as a “cash cow,” while the Scottish Greens have questioned the airport’s commitment to reducing emissions, pointing out that flights continue to operate to destinations like Birmingham, which are well-served by trains.

Currently, 37% of Edinburgh Airport’s passengers use buses or trams to travel to and from the terminal. Through these initiatives, the airport aims to increase this percentage by making public transport a more attractive option.

This move aligns with a broader trend among UK airports to adjust drop-off and pick-up fees as a means to manage traffic flow and promote environmentally friendly transportation alternatives.
