Drunken Fife Man Fined and Ordered to Pay Compensation for Glass Attack on Taxi Driver

A 35-year-old man from Fife has been fined and ordered to pay compensation after a drunken outburst that saw him hurl a glass at a taxi driver and subject him to a torrent of homophobic abuse.

Jaymie Wilson, from Kelty, appeared at Dunfermline Sheriff Court, where he admitted behaving in a threatening and abusive manner towards a taxi driver following a night out in Cowdenbeath.

The incident took place on 4 October last year, when Wilson was picked up from the Cross Guns pub. Initially cheerful and singing, he became “irate for no reason” upon arriving at Keltyhill Avenue, according to fiscal depute Azrah Yousaf.

The court heard that Wilson adopted an aggressive attitude, repeatedly shouted, swore, and uttered homophobic slurs, before throwing a glass and its contents at the driver, striking him with both liquid and shards of glass. He also refused to pay the £15 fare and threatened to assault the driver.

When later questioned by police, Wilson reportedly said: “I cannot remember anything. I can only apologise.”

Defence solicitor Heather Morrison said her client was “shocked and mortified” to learn of his behaviour, had apologised to the victim, and had since given up alcohol.

Sheriff Mark O’Hanlon fined Wilson £420, ordered him to pay £350 compensation, and placed him under one year of offender supervision as part of a community payback order aimed at addressing his alcohol issues.
