Doncaster Sheffield Airport, which ceased operations in November 2022, is poised for a revival with the potential return of five airlines when it reopens next year.
Previously a key travel hub in Northern England, the airport was shut down after its owner, the Peel Group, deemed it financially unsustainable. However, a fresh opportunity has emerged with Doncaster Council establishing FlyDoncaster, a company dedicated to overseeing the airport’s relaunch. The reopening, planned for spring 2026, will be managed operationally by German firm Munich Airport International (MAI).

Dr Lutz Weisser, Managing Director of MAI, indicated that discussions with airlines are ongoing but confidential. While specific carriers and destinations have yet to be confirmed, he stressed that the airport’s existing infrastructure provides a strong foundation for a swift revival. “It may need some renovation, and recertification is important, but it is all in place. It just needs a bit of polishing, and then you have an airport – and that is exciting,” he stated.
The Peel Group still owns the airport but is reportedly open to leasing it to the council, enabling FlyDoncaster to proceed with its plans.
Christian Foster, Programme Director at Doncaster Council and Head of FlyDoncaster, outlined the ambitious goal of attracting a diverse range of airlines. “Having a strategy where you only have an airport with one airline doesn’t work for Doncaster. Hence, we want a minimum of four to five airlines, and that’s where we are working at,” he said. He also emphasised efforts to restore 24-hour airspace operations by next year.
TUI, which previously operated flights from Doncaster Sheffield Airport to destinations such as Spain and Cyprus, has expressed interest in resuming services. A spokesperson for TUI affirmed: “TUI has always supported Doncaster Sheffield Airport, proudly flying customers from the region, and we were disappointed when the airport closed. We’re excited about actively engaging with stakeholders about a potential reopening.”
In addition to passenger flights, airport officials are aiming to significantly increase freight traffic, alleviating congestion in other UK transport hubs. Deborah Hogg, Executive Director of Corporate Resources for Doncaster Council and a FlyDoncaster director, highlighted the potential economic benefits: “Because there is so much congestion elsewhere, particularly in relation to freight, this might provide a safety valve for bringing much-needed cargo into the UK.”
Before flights can resume, the Civil Aviation Authority must reinstate the airport’s airspace for use. Officials are confident that the necessary approvals will be secured, paving the way for Doncaster Sheffield Airport’s return as a vital transport hub for the region.
