Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA), once described as the UK’s largest “ghost airport” following its closure in 2022, is taking major steps towards reopening, with a targeted relaunch set for spring 2026. This ambitious plan signals a revival for the region’s aviation sector and offers new hope for economic growth in South Yorkshire.

£363 Million Deal Secured for the Site
The City of Doncaster Council has agreed to a 125-year lease worth £363 million to take over the site from former owners Peel Group. A new publicly-owned company, FlyDoncaster, has been created to manage the site with the intention of transforming the airport into a thriving hub of connectivity and employment.
A further £30 million funding boost from the UK Government and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority will support infrastructure improvements and operational restart plans.
International Expertise Brought Onboard
To bring DSA back to life, Doncaster Council has partnered with Munich Airport International GmbH (MAI), one of Europe’s top airport operators. MAI will support operations and strategic planning, ensuring a high standard of service from day one.
Additionally, UK-based aviation consultants FP Airports Ltd are working closely with the council to ensure that all regulatory, safety, and operational standards are met in time for the relaunch.
Economic Boost and Job Creation
The reopening is expected to generate over 5,000 jobs and contribute up to £5 billion to the UK economy by 2050. The knock-on effect for local businesses, tourism, and supply chain logistics could be transformative, particularly as many residents had been forced to travel far further to reach other regional airports.
Airlines Showing Interest
TUI, which operated the final flight before DSA’s closure, has already expressed an interest in returning. Other previous operators including Ryanair, easyJet and Thomas Cook may also be encouraged to resume flights.
Early route discussions have focused on major European destinations such as Alicante, Paris, Berlin, Majorca, and Dubrovnik, which were historically strong performers for the airport.
Local Support Driving the Mission
The airport’s closure sparked widespread criticism, with many residents and local businesses voicing concern over lost travel convenience and economic opportunity. Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones has called the airport’s reopening her top priority and has received cross-party political support for the project.
Hurdles Ahead
Before aircraft can take to the skies, significant regulatory and technical steps remain. The airport must re-establish airspace classifications, upgrade key landing equipment, and reapply for its full operational licence.
A safeguard clause has also been included in the lease, allowing the council to walk away after six years if the project proves unsustainable—ensuring taxpayer funds are protected.
Doncaster Sheffield Airport’s journey to reopening is well underway. If successful, this project could mark one of the biggest aviation comebacks in the UK, putting South Yorkshire back on the map for both business and leisure travel.
