Two major airlines are pulling out of one of London Gatwick’s flagship long-haul routes, leaving Norse Atlantic as the only operator flying direct between Gatwick and New York.
Delta Ends Gatwick Return
Delta Air Lines relaunched its Gatwick–JFK service in 2023 after a 15-year hiatus, but the comeback will be short-lived. The carrier has confirmed that the route will cease on 7 September 2025, with no plans to resume in 2026.
The move reduces choice for South London and South East England passengers who had relied on Delta for a direct transatlantic option without travelling to Heathrow Airport.

British Airways Cancels Gatwick–JFK Permanently
British Airways is also withdrawing from the Gatwick–New York market. Its once-daily service will end on 25 October 2025 and will not return for summer 2026.
BA will instead focus its transatlantic capacity at Heathrow, where it runs nine daily flights to New York. The airline has also announced plans to redeploy aircraft to other long-haul destinations, including Bangkok and Jamaica.
Impact on Travellers
The decision by both carriers leaves Norse Atlantic Airways as the only airline operating Gatwick–New York flights. With less competition, fares could increase, and flexibility for passengers may be reduced.
Travellers from Kent, Sussex, and South London who prefer Gatwick may now face additional costs and longer journeys if forced to travel via Heathrow. Aviation experts estimate families could pay up to £100 extra in travel expenses when shifting airports.
Heathrow Gains at Gatwick’s Expense
Industry observers note that Heathrow remains the preferred hub for both Delta and British Airways, thanks to stronger demand, greater connectivity, and premium business traffic. Gatwick, while popular with leisure travellers, now risks losing ground in the transatlantic market.
