Police were called out this morning after reports of a man cycling along the M6 Toll motorway.
According to a post shared by Staffordshire Road Crime Team, officers received multiple calls from members of the public about a male cyclist “merrily riding” down the motorway.
The Road Crime Team said the cyclist had entered the motorway after Google Maps directed him to do so. Officers noted that the rider had no lights and, even after realising he had made a mistake, continued past several junctions where he could have exited the motorway safely.
Police attended the scene, removed the male and his cycle from the motorway network, and confirmed he was reported for the offence.

DM News Commentary
This is a strong reminder of just how dangerous blind reliance on sat nav directions can be — especially for cyclists and vulnerable road users.
Motorways are strictly prohibited for cyclists for good reason. High-speed traffic, limited visibility, and short reaction times leave no margin for error, not just for the cyclist but for drivers who could suddenly encounter someone where they absolutely shouldn’t be.
From a professional driver’s point of view, incidents like this are nightmare scenarios. A cyclist on a motorway puts lives at risk instantly, and it only takes one moment of surprise for things to turn tragic.
Sat navs are tools — not authority. Road users still need to apply common sense, understand road signage, and know where they are legally allowed to be.
