A Birmingham councillor is calling for average speed cameras to be installed on a busy city route after a three-car collision left a taxi flipped onto its roof on Saturday night (8 November).
According to Birmingham Live, emergency services were called to Bordesley Green East at around 6pm, following reports of a dramatic multi-vehicle crash. The road was partially closed as police and paramedics attended the scene.
West Midlands Police confirmed that two people were treated for minor injuries and that investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the collision.
Councillor’s urgent safety plea
Local councillor Baber Baz, who represents Yardley West and Stechford, described the incident as “a crash waiting to happen” and urged Birmingham City Council to act immediately.
He told Birmingham Live:
“This was a crash with a taxi ending up on its roof. The stretch from Aldi up to the lights by Stechford Police Station has become notorious for speeding.”
Councillor Baz has called for average-speed cameras to be installed between the Aldi supermarket and Stechford Police Station, warning that cars are frequently seen driving at 70 to 80 mph along the stretch despite the 30 mph limit. He added that unless urgent action is taken, it is only a matter of time before a fatal crash occurs.
Road safety concerns
The collision happened close to Heartlands Hospital, adding to public concern over speeding on the busy arterial road. The councillor noted that drivers often accelerate sharply after passing the traffic lights, creating a high-risk environment for both motorists and pedestrians.
Birmingham Live reported that residents have long complained about dangerous driving in the area, with repeated calls for better enforcement and traffic-calming measures.
What this means for taxi and private-hire drivers
Taxi and private-hire drivers who regularly travel through Bordesley Green East may welcome the potential introduction of average-speed cameras if it helps curb reckless driving. Reduced speeds could improve safety and lower the likelihood of insurance claims or downtime from vehicle damage.
However, the move would also require drivers to stay alert to any future enforcement changes on routes frequently used for passenger pick-ups and drop-offs around the Yardley and Stechford areas.

DM News Commentary
The overturned taxi serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by speeding in densely populated areas. For the city’s professional drivers, road safety improvements are essential — not just for passengers but for the wider community. Councillor Baz’s proposal could mark a crucial step towards safer streets across Birmingham if implemented swiftly.
