A former private hire driver has been reported after allegedly operating illegally and dangerously overloading a vehicle with passengers, including children.
The incident came to light after officers targeted the driver on suspicion of conducting unlicensed ‘cash in hand’ journeys, following the revocation of their private hire licence.
When stopped, the vehicle—licensed to carry five passengers—was found to be carrying seven individuals. Shockingly, the two youngest passengers had been placed in the footwell area, a serious safety concern.
The driver attempted to downplay the situation, claiming, “I was only taking them down the road.” Authorities, however, dismissed the statement as both unsafe and likely untrue.
The driver has now been reported for the dangerous carriage of passengers. In addition, social services were alerted, as the mother of the children was present and allowed the situation to happen, putting her children at serious risk.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper licensing, vehicle limits, and the legal responsibilities drivers and guardians have when transporting young passengers.
