Card payments to become mandatory in Cheltenham taxis from September

From 1 September 2025, all taxi and private hire vehicles licensed by Cheltenham Borough Council will be required to accept card payments, in a move aimed at improving passenger safety and accessibility.

Under the new rule, cash-only rides will be phased out, and drivers will no longer be allowed to refuse a fare if the passenger wants to pay by debit or credit card.

Cheltenham Borough Council says the update will ensure passengers can always get home safely, especially during nights out or when they don’t have cash to hand.
