Bristol taxi and private hire checks uncover illegal tyre and missing wheel nuts

Licensing officers in Bristol have found several safety issues during recent taxi and private hire vehicle inspections — including an illegal tyre and missing wheel nuts — prompting renewed warnings about maintenance standards within the city’s licensed fleet.

Safety checks reveal serious defects

The spot checks were carried out by Bristol City Council’s Licensing Team and Avon & Somerset Police as part of an ongoing operation to ensure vehicles remain safe and roadworthy.

During the inspections, officers discovered:

  • A private hire vehicle operating with an illegal tyre below the minimum tread depth.
  • Another vehicle missing wheel nuts, posing a significant safety risk.
  • Additional minor defects which drivers were instructed to fix immediately.

The findings led to immediate suspension notices being issued until repairs were completed and re-inspections passed.

Council: “Public safety is our priority”

A Bristol City Council spokesperson said that taxi and private hire vehicles must meet strict safety standards to protect both passengers and drivers. They added that the council will not hesitate to suspend or revoke licences where vehicles are found to be in a dangerous condition.

Under local licensing policy, vehicles must undergo routine inspections — including tyre, brake, and bodywork checks — and drivers are expected to carry out daily walk-around inspections before starting work.

Enforcement teams ramp up checks

Officers say that checks will continue in the coming weeks, focusing on mechanical condition, documentation, and compliance with licence conditions such as signage and insurance.

The operation forms part of a wider safety push across the West of England region following a number of recent enforcement actions against unsafe or poorly maintained vehicles.

Message to drivers and operators

The council is urging all taxi and private hire operators to:

  • Inspect tyres regularly for tread depth and damage.
  • Check that all wheel nuts are present and secure.
  • Carry out daily vehicle safety checks before working.
  • Fix any faults immediately to avoid suspension.

A missing wheel nut or bald tyre can have catastrophic consequences, officials warned — particularly for vehicles carrying passengers at high speeds or long distances.
