Bristol Airport has unveiled bold expansion plans aimed at transforming the travel hub into a future-ready gateway, capable of handling up to 15 million passengers annually by 2040 — a significant increase from its current 10 million capacity.
At the heart of the airport’s long-term vision is the introduction of long-haul routes to destinations including the U.S. East Coast and the Middle East. These international links are expected to boost connectivity for the South West and Wales, while also enhancing the airport’s appeal to both leisure and business travellers.
The masterplan outlines several major infrastructure upgrades, including a proposed expansion of the terminal building to accommodate increased passenger flow and modernised services. One of the standout features of the plan is the possibility of introducing a vertiport for electric air taxis, signalling Bristol’s commitment to emerging aviation technologies.
To support the growing demand, a £60 million investment in public transport improvements is also on the table. This includes enhanced bus and coach connections and better access to regional transport networks, helping reduce reliance on private cars and lowering the airport’s carbon footprint.
A formal planning application is expected to be submitted later in 2025. If approved, the developments could bring significant economic benefits to the region, including job creation and increased tourism.
