Bradford Metropolitan District Council is reviewing its licensing regulations and considering the removal of the traditional knowledge test for taxi and private hire drivers. The potential move has sparked debate over whether in-depth knowledge of local roads is still necessary in an era dominated by GPS navigation.
The knowledge test, which assesses drivers’ familiarity with local landmarks, routes, and key areas, has long been a requirement for obtaining a taxi licence in Bradford. However, some argue that modern technology has rendered the test obsolete, while others believe it remains crucial for ensuring efficient and reliable service.
Talib Hussain, a taxi driver who supports keeping the test, believes that relying solely on GPS can lead to problems. “You can’t rely on GPS all the time,” he said. “It can sometimes mislead you, and I believe my driving has significantly improved due to my in-depth knowledge of the city.”
On the other hand, veteran driver Taj Mohammed, who has nearly 50 years of experience, argues that the test is no longer necessary. “I think it’s an unnecessary obstacle now. Even for newer drivers, I don’t see any disadvantage. The more they utilise GPS, the better they’ll learn the city through practical experience.”
Nadeem Ahmed, chair of the Bradford Private Hire Operators’ Association, supports scrapping the test, describing it as “a bit of an irrelevance” in the modern era of reliable navigation systems.
In addition to reviewing the knowledge test, the council is also examining potential changes to vehicle branding requirements and reassessing rules surrounding the declaration of previous criminal convictions.
The outcome of the review could lead to significant changes for taxi and private hire drivers in Bradford, shaping the future of licensing requirements in the city.
