Eligible bereaved military family members will be able to use free National Rail travel during Remembrance weekend under an offer announced by the Department for Transport and Ministry of Defence on 12 September 2026.
The event-specific arrangement covers Saturday 7 November and Sunday 8 November 2026. It is intended to help eligible family members attend Remembrance services and commemorative events, including those taking place in London and elsewhere in Great Britain.
The offer is available to one next of kin of a person who died while serving in the Armed Forces. Applicants must apply for a free ticket through the Defence Medical Welfare Service. The application deadline is 16 October 2026.
The government describes the measure as the first time this group has been included in the Remembrance-period rail travel offer. It expects the provision to support hundreds of bereaved military family members during the two-day travel period.

The announcement extends the established free-travel support already available to serving personnel and veterans for Remembrance events. That existing arrangement remains separate from the newly announced provision for eligible next of kin.
Rail Delivery Group’s co-chief executive said train operators would extend their Remembrance-period support to the newly eligible next-of-kin group. The offer therefore involves both the government announcement and rail-industry participation for the specified weekend.
The concession is limited to 7 and 8 November 2026. It is not a permanent change to National Rail fares or to the wider eligibility rules for rail travel. Eligible applicants will need to complete the Defence Medical Welfare Service process by the October deadline if they wish to use the provision.
Remembrance services and commemorative events are held across Great Britain during the period. The announced offer is intended to allow the eligible next-of-kin group to travel to those events without paying for the qualifying National Rail journey during the stated weekend.
