North Lanarkshire Council has opened a consultation on proposed revised taxi fare scales, including a 7% increase in distance-based fare elements and a rise in the waiting-time equivalent from £12 to £15 an hour.
The consultation opened on 7 September 2026 and closes on 2 October 2026. No fare increase has been approved, with the current exercise seeking views on the proposed scales rather than approval to introduce them.
The council’s current taxi fare scales have applied since 1 May 2024 and are due for review under the statutory timetable. The existing tariff starts at £3 for the first 880 yards, according to the committee report supporting the consultation.

An independently commissioned review found that taxi operating costs had risen by about 10.6% since the previous review, the report says.
Alongside the proposed changes to distance rates and waiting time, the consultation proposals include changes to additional charges. The council has not yet made a final determination on the revised fares.
North Lanarkshire Council’s Finance and Resources Committee is scheduled to consider consultation responses and make a final determination on 18 November 2026.
