The Government has blocked the permanent export of a tiny Anglo-Saxon animal mount discovered by a metal detectorist in Norfolk, giving potential UK buyers time to try to save the object for the nation.
The temporary export ban was imposed on 4 September 2026 after experts judged the mount met all three Waverley national-treasure criteria. The initial ban runs until 3 November 2026.
The object is believed to date from the late fifth or early sixth century. It depicts a four-legged animal and is made from gilded copper alloy.
Measuring about 33.7mm in length and weighing roughly 5 grams, the mount was found at Holme Hale in Norfolk in 2024. Its small size contrasts with the significance attached to its age, design and archaeological discovery.
