Stolen Taxi Driven Wrong Way Down A55 After Cyclist Injured in Holyhead

A taxi reported stolen in Holyhead was driven the wrong way along the A55 after a cyclist was injured and several parked vehicles were damaged, North Wales Police have confirmed.

Police received a report that the taxi had been stolen from Holyhead at around 7.30pm on Monday, 24 August.

Shortly afterwards, the vehicle was involved in a collision with a cyclist on London Road in Holyhead. A number of parked vehicles were also damaged during the incident.

The cyclist was taken to hospital and remained there on Tuesday. Police said the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The taxi subsequently entered the westbound carriageway of the A55 at Holyhead while travelling in the wrong direction.

North Wales Police temporarily closed the road while officers responded to the incident.

At around 7.55pm, officers safely brought the vehicle to a stop on the A55 between Rhosneigr and Rhostrehewfa.

A man was arrested on suspicion of several offences, including theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and failing to provide a specimen.

North Wales Police said on Tuesday afternoon that the arrested man remained in custody and was continuing to be questioned while the investigation remained ongoing.

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Nick Evans said officers were continuing to investigate the incidents in Holyhead and on the A55.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed any part of what happened, or who has relevant dashcam, CCTV or mobile phone footage, to contact the force.

It is important to stress that the arrested man has not been convicted of any offence in connection with the incident. The offences detailed by police are suspicions under investigation and enquiries remain ongoing.

The incident attracted considerable attention after footage emerged showing the taxi travelling towards oncoming traffic on the dual carriageway. Police were able to stop the vehicle without a further collision taking place on the A55.
