Passengers travelling between central London and Heathrow Airport face disruption this week as a three-day closure affects a large section of the Piccadilly line.
The planned closure began on Tuesday, 25 August and is due to continue through Wednesday and Thursday, 26 and 27 August, while Transport for London carries out work connected with the Piccadilly line upgrade.
There is no service between Cockfosters and Uxbridge during the closure, taking the Piccadilly line out of service through central London and across a large part of its normal route.
However, Heathrow Airport has not been completely cut off from the Piccadilly line.
Services can still operate between Heathrow and Acton Town, meaning passengers making local journeys along that section can continue to use the Tube.
What passengers cannot make during the closure is the normal direct Piccadilly line journey between central London and Heathrow. Travellers using the remaining Heathrow service will need to change at Acton Town and use alternative Underground or rail connections for the rest of their journey.
The closure is part of a wider programme of work preparing the Piccadilly line for its new generation of trains.
Transport for London lists the Piccadilly line upgrade among its major works affecting passengers during August 2026.
The upgrade includes work to infrastructure used by the line ahead of the introduction of the new train fleet, which is expected to feature walk-through carriages, air conditioning and improved passenger information.
Further Piccadilly line closures are planned during September, October and November as the upgrade programme continues.
The disruption is particularly relevant for airport passengers because the Piccadilly line normally provides a direct Underground connection between central London and Heathrow’s terminals.
Other rail options serving Heathrow include the Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express, although passengers should check live journey information and allow additional time before travelling.
Passengers with flights during the three-day closure should therefore plan their route before setting off rather than assuming the usual direct Piccadilly line journey to Heathrow is operating.
