A 21-year-old cleaner who filmed herself driving at nearly 100mph on Snapchat before causing a fatal head-on collision has had her prison term increased to nine years and three months.
Liberty Mitchell, from Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire, had passed her driving test just three weeks before the crash on the B4425 near Aldsworth, Gloucestershire, in December 2022. She was travelling at around 96mph in a 60mph zone when she attempted to overtake three vehicles at once on the wrong side of the road, clipping another car and triggering a multi-vehicle pile-up. Taxi driver Octavian Codreanu died at the scene, and his passenger Moyra Whelan, a 35-year-old history teacher travelling to a friend’s wedding, later died in hospital. Six other people were injured, three of them seriously.
Mitchell was originally sentenced to six years and eight months at Gloucester Crown Court after admitting two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing death by driving while uninsured, and three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Senior judges at the Court of Appeal lengthened the sentence after Attorney General Ellie Reeves KC MP referred the case as unduly lenient, pointing to Mitchell’s reckless behaviour and history of sharing dangerous speeding videos on social media. She was also disqualified from driving for more than eight years and must pass an extended test before regaining her licence.
