Anyone weighing up a switch to electric this year has more genuinely affordable choices than ever before, with the UK’s cheapest new EVs now starting from under £15,000 for a proper, motorway-legal car.
At the very bottom of the market sits the Citroën Ami, a tiny quadricycle limited to 28mph that costs around £7,695 — useful for short city hops but not a realistic alternative to a petrol hatchback. For a car that can actually do motorway speeds, the Dacia Spring is the one to look at, priced from around £12,440 to £15,000 depending on trim, with roughly 140 to 165 miles of range. The Leapmotor T03 sits close behind at £14,495.
Move up slightly and the choices get a lot more interesting. The reborn Renault 5 E-Tech has generated huge interest and starts with a 120hp motor, a 40kWh battery and genuinely useful kit like a heat pump and dual-zone climate control — and it currently qualifies for a £1,500 discount through the government’s Electric Car Grant. The Hyundai Inster, Citroën ë-C3 and Vauxhall Corsa Electric round out the mid-budget bracket, typically offering 200 to 250 miles of range and rapid charging speeds over 100kW.
The Electric Car Grant, reintroduced in July 2025, remains a big factor in all this — offering up to £3,750 off eligible new EVs priced at or below £37,000, with the biggest discounts reserved for the most sustainably produced models. Combined with home charging costs as low as 7 to 8p per kWh, the running cost case for even the budget end of the EV market is stronger than it’s ever been.
For taxi and private hire drivers weighing up their next vehicle, it’s worth remembering that low list price isn’t the whole story — range, charging speed and reliability matter more when you’re covering serious daily mileage. But for anyone just looking for an affordable way into electric motoring, 2026 is shaping up to be the best year yet.
