Two Bald Tyres, One Suspension: Liverpool PHV Pulled At Lime Street

A Liverpool-licensed private hire vehicle has been suspended on the spot after enforcement officers found two illegal tyres during a routine inspection near Lime Street Station.

Liverpool City Council Licensing said the defects were picked up during recent compliance checks at the city’s main rail hub. The vehicle was immediately taken off the road and further enforcement action is being pursued against the driver. In a message shared on social media, the council summed it up bluntly: two illegal tyres, one routine inspection, one immediate suspension.

Photographs released by the council appeared to show tyres worn well below the legal tread limit. Under UK law, car tyres must have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre and right around the circumference. Fall below that and you’re not only risking a suspension from the trade — you’re looking at a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre.

It’s a quick, cheap check that takes a couple of minutes before a shift, and it can save you a day off the road, a hefty fine and points on your licence. Worn or damaged tyres also push up stopping distances and raise the risk of a blowout, so the safety case is every bit as strong as the licensing one.
