Taxi Driver Allegedly Assaulted and Abused Over Pro-Palestine Symbol

A disturbing incident has been reported in Reading, where a long-serving private hire driver was allegedly assaulted and racially abused by passengers following a dispute over a £10 fare.

According to the Facebook Reel, the incident unfolded after a male and female passenger allegedly refused to pay for their journey. The situation is said to have escalated when the woman allegedly punched the driver in the back of the head.

The driver believes the confrontation may have been triggered by an air freshener displayed inside the vehicle, featuring a peace symbol alongside a Palestinian flag and a remembrance poppy. During the altercation, the passengers are alleged to have directed racist abuse at the driver, telling him to “go back to where he came from”.

Fearing for his safety, the driver reportedly began recording the incident. The driver has worked in the private hire trade for 26 years and, according to those close to him, has never previously experienced an incident of this nature.

At the time of writing, it is unclear whether arrests have been made or whether the incident is being formally investigated, but the allegations raise serious concerns around passenger behaviour and driver safety.

This is a deeply troubling report and, sadly, one that many drivers across the UK will find all too familiar.

Disputes over fares are already stressful enough, but physical assault and racist abuse — regardless of political views, symbols, or beliefs — are completely unacceptable. Drivers are there to provide a service, not to be subjected to violence or intimidation in their workplace.

What stands out here is how quickly a routine journey allegedly escalated into physical violence. The fact that the driver felt the need to start recording highlights the lack of protection many private hire and taxi drivers feel when incidents unfold inside their vehicles.

If proven, this would represent not just fare evasion, but a serious assault and potential hate crime. Drivers should never be put in a position where their personal safety is compromised simply for doing their job.

DM News encourages any drivers who experience abuse or violence to report incidents promptly and ensure evidence is preserved wherever possible.
