Liverpool Airport hosts runway run raising £70,000 for Alder Hey

Amazing to see Liverpool John Lennon Airport transform a completely closed runway at 2am into the setting for such a fantastic community event. Opportunities like this barely ever happen — the chance to run along a fully lit, operational runway in the middle of the night is something most people will only experience once in their lifetime.

The fact that 350 runners turned up at that time of night shows just how strong the support is for Alder Hey and the life-changing work the hospital does. For many of those taking part, running down the centreline of an airport runway, surrounded by lights usually reserved for aircraft, will be a story they tell for years.

Taxi and private-hire drivers who operate around Liverpool Airport will know how busy the site can be during normal hours, so the idea of having that enormous runway entirely to yourself at 2am is something special. It also shows what’s possible when transport organisations, big or small, collaborate to support local causes. Operators and fleets could take inspiration from this by getting involved in community fundraising, sponsoring local events or partnering with hospitals and charities.

Most importantly, the £70,000 raised will go directly towards supporting neonatal care at Alder Hey — making this not only a unique experience, but one that will genuinely make a difference for families across the region.
