Seven taxi vehicles suspended in York after joint police and council crackdown

Seven taxi vehicles have been suspended from service in York following a joint enforcement operation between North Yorkshire Police and City of York Council.

According to a report by the Gazette & Herald, officers carried out a series of vehicle checks across the city to ensure all licensed taxis and private hire vehicles (PHVs) met safety and licensing requirements.

The operation, held earlier this month, resulted in seven vehicles being suspended due to non-compliance. A further five vehicles were issued advisory notices for minor defects.

Police confirmed that the joint initiative formed part of ongoing work to ensure vehicles operating in the city are safe and properly licensed. The enforcement team focused on vehicle condition, required signage, documentation, and driver identification.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson told the Gazette & Herald that these operations “play a vital role in keeping both drivers and passengers safe” and help to uphold the high standards expected of the city’s licensed trade.

DM News Commentary

York’s results show that proactive enforcement continues to be a cornerstone of maintaining passenger safety in the taxi and private hire sector. While most drivers operate responsibly, the suspension of multiple vehicles in a single operation highlights the importance of regular inspections and strong partnerships between councils and police forces.

For operators, it’s a reminder to stay on top of routine maintenance, paperwork, and signage — particularly as regional enforcement teams step up checks ahead of the busy winter season.
