Wolverhampton bans 3D and 4D number plates on licensed taxis

Wolverhampton City Council has announced a strict new ban on 3D and 4D number plates for all licensed taxi and private hire vehicles — with immediate effect.

Under the new enforcement rules, any vehicle attending inspection with 3D or 4D plates will be refused a licence. Compliance officers will also issue a Section 68 suspension notice to any vehicle found operating with these plates during roadside checks.

The city’s Licensing Department said the move is aimed at maintaining clear, legible registration plates that comply with DVLA visibility standards, particularly for ANPR and CCTV enforcement systems used to monitor road safety and compliance.

Drivers who no longer have their original flat-style plates are being advised to purchase replacements only from DVSA-approved plate producers, ensuring they meet the required legal specifications.

The council added that this policy applies to all licensed Wolverhampton vehicles, including those operating outside the city under cross-border arrangements.
