Home vs Rapid charging costs: Fast charging too expensive?

One of DM News readers has recorded his home charging and rapid charging costs to see the differences. He is a private hire driver but mainly does airport transfers all over the UK. Travels from Heathrow, Birmingham, and Manchester Airport and does rely on rapid charging a bit too much.

As shown above, the combined rapid chargers totaled 874 Kwh which cost £354 and home charging usage was 832 Kwh which was a little less but resulted in a lot cheaper at £77.

In total, the driver drove 5316 miles in the month using 1706 Kwh costing a total of £431 resulting in £0.08 per mile.

The above rapid charging costs around 40p is very cheap compared to some rapid chargers can cost 80p to £1 per kWh. At those rates the costs would be even worse, this article shows that home charging is a lot cheaper than rapid charging and if possible should be a priority.

Driver Matty has stated, “Full electric cars are expensive to buy but very cheap to run when most of the charging is done at home on a decent low tariff, Rapid charging can be very expensive and the price per mile is compared to a diesel car.”
