St Helens Taxi Licensing Urges Drivers to Report Vehicles Without Door Signage

St Helens Council’s taxi licensing team has issued a fresh reminder to all private hire drivers in the Liverpool City Region to ensure they are displaying the correct operator door signage while working — and is calling on drivers to report those who fail to comply.

According to the message sent out to licence holders, displaying door signage is not only a licence condition but also an important safety measure. The signage helps the public confirm they are entering a legitimate, licensed vehicle, giving passengers confidence and reassurance during their journeys.

Licensing officers stressed that vehicles operating without the correct signage could face further enforcement action.

Reporting Non-Compliant Vehicles

The email also urged drivers to report any vehicles from outside authorities working in the Liverpool City Region without the required signage. Officers said they only need the licensing authority and vehicle plate number to raise the issue with the relevant council.

The statement highlighted Wolverhampton as the only licensing authority in the UK that does not require door signage as part of its conditions. Licensing confirmed that any issues involving Wolverhampton-licensed drivers should also be reported, with details including vehicle plate number, date, time, location, and a short description of the incident.

Passenger Safety the Priority

A spokesperson from the licensing team said the aim of the measure is to make sure passengers can clearly identify the vehicles they are getting into:

“We want all passengers to feel safe and be able to verify the vehicles they are entering. Door signage plays a key role in that, and vehicles not displaying it will be considered for further action.”

This latest move comes amid growing tensions between locally licensed drivers and the large number of Wolverhampton-licensed vehicles working in the Liverpool City Region, often via app-based platforms.
